Lily's is a story
of survival and found love...
This story begins with Lily (as she is now known) who was on her
own, only days or a week away from giving birth, when she was struck by a car or truck. With a dislocated hip and her other
rear leg broken in two places, Lily managed to dig a hole in the ground and give birth to four pups.
How she survived
for approximately three weeks on her own in the cold and rain, keeping herself and her pups alive, is a story of survival.
Too injured to forage for food, she was able to give the pups the nutrition they needed, while suffering from pain and hunger.
She must have been desperate as she struck out one day to find food – and that is where she found love.
Angie Callahan's father-in-law spotted the wounded, starving dog and called her for help. After feeding Lily,
Angie tried to coax her into a dry, safe environment, but Lily was determined to be followed into the woods to save her pups.
Some moms would be very protective of their litters, but not Lily – it was as if she knew survival for her pups
and herself would lie with the generous lady with the food, and for Angie it was a renewal of herself in the ability to take
on an injured dog and 4 puppies – they were all bundled up and taken into a haven, Angie’s home. Dr. Carpenter
of Hiram Animal Hospital was contacted immediately.
Today, the puppies are continuing to grow, but are still extremely
dependent on Mom who needs surgery to repair the double broken leg and to reset / rebuild her other hip. She will not
be able to continue to walk in her current condition as the bones try to heal in their misaligned positions.
If you would like to help Lily, donations made be made by check payable to

"Lily,
safe and on the road to recovery in her forever home"
Lily's first surgery was a success! In late November, her fractured leg was repaired and she is recovering
well. The next step was to repair the hip and this surgery took place in mid-January.
The puppies are all happy and healthy in their new homes.

UPDATE APRIL 25th
Lily is doing great, she totes her leg sometimes, but
just when she is tired. She is getting around good, and has mucho energy. She's due to go back to the surgeon next week,
and hopefully he'll release her, and we can get the heartworm treatment scheduled...Gus did fine with his "jewel
clipping" and has not missed a beat. He's still as hyper and naughty as ever, but since he's the baby he gets
away with alot!

Thank you so much for what you're doing with Lily and Gus!!

UPDATE March 8, 2007 Lily underwent her second surgery
on January 30, 2007. More repairs on the hip/leg with braces and uncomfortable hardware. Lily was a fantastic
trooper through it all.
After 6 - 8 weeks of recovery time, the next step will
be a spay around mid-March. A heartworm treatment will then be next and she will finally be through.
Such a patient girl who has endured so much, but is now living in luxury where
she belongs!
